Vice President for Finance and Administration, Limestone College

INSTITUTION:

Limestone College has been a pioneer in providing access to higher education. In 1845, when higher education was only a dream for many young women, Limestone was founded as the first women’s college in South Carolina and one of the first in the US. It is the third-oldest college in South Carolina. In the early 1900s, when young men from the local area sought higher education, but could not afford to attend distant universities, Limestone admitted men as commuting students. In the 1960s, Limestone became fully coeducational. In the 1970s, when many institutions had no interest in educating working adults, Limestone established the Block Program, one of the pioneer programs for non-traditional students. The Block Program allowed students to complete their bachelor’s degrees entirely through evening classes, using a one-course-at-a-time accelerated format. In the mid-1990s, through the establishment of the Virtual Campus, Limestone emerged as a national leader in applying computer technology to teach students who could not utilize traditional classroom settings. In 2005, the Block Program and the Virtual Campus were combined into the Extended Campus Program and in 2018, the program was renamed the Online & Evening Program. Providing higher education access to those needing it the most has been a proud theme throughout the history of Limestone College. Looking forward, Limestone recently unveiled plans for a new “Global Experience” that will send undergraduate Day Campus students to study around the world, starting with the 2019-2020 academic year.

Today, Limestone is an accredited, independent, coeducational, residential, four-year liberal arts institution, and a non-denominational Christian college. With over 3,000 students, Limestone is one of the three largest private accredited colleges in South Carolina. The main campus is located in Gaffney, in the Piedmont region of the state. Gaffney is within an hour’s drive of the Greenville/ Spartanburg and Charlotte metropolitan areas. Limestone also offers its Evening Program at six sites throughout South Carolina. Today, Limestone is truly a statewide college and its Online Program makes the College truly a worldwide institution.

REPORTS/RELATIONSHIPS:

The Vice President for Finance and Administration (VPFA) reports directly to the President and serves as a member of the Cabinet. Other positions reporting to the President include: Provost; Vice President for Institutional Advancement; Vice President for Athletics; Vice President for Enrollment; Vice President for Communications.

Positions reporting to the VPFA include: Controller; Chief of Security; Director of Human Resources; Mailroom. Total number of employees in the functions supervised is approximately 18.

In addition to those listed above, the VPFA will work closely with, and/or communicate regularly with, a variety of stakeholders (internal and external) and vendors including, but not limited to: Board of Trustees (especially the Finance Committee of the Board), banks and other lenders, legal counsel, outsource partners, government officials, and community representatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Vice President for Finance and Administration serves as the College’s Chief Financial Officer. The VPFA leads and manages, strategically and operationally, employees who are responsible for the administration of business, legal, risk management, human resources, financial records, student account financial records, vendor accounts payable, vendor accounts receivables, physical plant facilities, and auxiliary services (which includes Public Safety, Post Office, and the Facilities, Housekeeping, Bookstore, and Food Services outsource partner).

The VPFA is therefore responsible and accountable for the key administrative and financial functions of the College, as listed above, which are encompassed in an annual operating budget of approximately $50 million. Therefore, the VPFA’s functions support and advance the mission of the College by providing excellent stewardship of human, physical, and fiscal resources. All efforts in this regard are centered on providing all campus communities with valued, efficient, and effective guidance and services in these areas. These responsibilities and duties are to be executed with the goal of furthering Limestone’s mission of educating students from diverse backgrounds in the liberal arts and selected professional disciplines.

Specific duties will include, but not necessarily be limited to:

  • Responsibility for: funds accounting, timely and accurate financial reporting, budgeting, human resources, endowment management (in conjunction with the Investment Committee of the Board), debt management, receipt and disbursement of funds, legal affairs, risk management, payroll, and cashiering.
  • Responsibility for physical plant facilities which includes: planning, design, construction, renovation, and repair; energy conservation, grounds maintenance, operation and maintenance of buildings, and the rental of facilities when not required to be used by the college community in accomplishing its educational mission.
  • Responsibility for auxiliary services as listed above.
  • Lead efforts to improve institutional effectiveness by employing good business practices such as process improvement, continuous quality improvement, benchmarking, and balanced scorecard methods; work strategically and collaboratively to improve Limestone’s financial strength through strategic planning, data analysis, innovative ideas, effective partnerships, efficiencies, high quality budgeting and monitoring, accurate accounting and tax compliance, and useful reporting required to support sound decision-making and sound business practices.
  • Meet regularly/as necessary with the President, the Finance Committee of the Board, the Board of Trustees, the Cabinet, and other appropriate college leadership to report and/or advise on all matters financial and/or related to the functional areas of responsibility.
  • Collaborate with external vendors (outsource partners, auditors, legal counsel, etc.) to ensure timely, accurate, and independent reports related to the financial condition of Limestone and to manage any risk associated with the College’s endeavors.

REQUIREMENTS:

The VPFA position requires sound technical skills and knowledge of all aspects of business affairs, particularly in the areas of accounting, funds management, and the functions and principles of management. Other requirements include:

  • Ability to think strategically, anticipate opportunities, promote, initiate, and embrace appropriate change, and implement new strategies in a complex environment with a diverse constituency.
  • Related professional financial and/or administrative experience that demonstrates progressive responsibility and evidence of strategic leadership. Applicable higher education senior financial/administrative management experience is a plus.
  • Effective leadership skills combined with a strong work ethic and an ability to prioritize work, advance multiple projects at once, and adjust plans as circumstances change.
  • Collaborative nature and positive outlook that supports the building of teams and effective relationships across organizational lines; ability to mentor and develop staff while promoting a respectful environment and workplace.
  • Exemplary communication skills; capacity to establish effective working relationships and communication with all stakeholders including committees of the Board and the entire Board of Trustees.
  • Experience with capital projects and bond financing, and significant banking relationship experience, is a plus.
  • Master’s in Business Administration, CPA designation, or educational background sufficient to take the CPA exam is strongly preferred.
